This project was also for a graphics class I took earlier on in my school career, and we had to choose a graphic designer and create a calendar based on their style, but still be creative and do it in our own way. With that being said, this is a Calendar inspired by the graphic designer Massimo Vignelli, who used very bold and vibrant (or red, black, and white) colors, lines, shapes, and overlapping to create modern and geometric-like pieces.
This project uses line, color, contrast, and repetition in a way that shows my skill and depth of knowledge. I used a black background and bold and vibrant colors for the days and the month to create a dramatic contrast to play into Vignelli’s style. I used the repetition of the name of months to add more character, depth, and Vignelli style of overlapping to the design. And then lastly, to add a sense of decoration and the geometric lines and the modern feel that Vignelli often included in his work; I added the white lines in the top left-hand corner.
The specification for this project was to choose a graphic designer and create a calendar in their style, but creatively and uniquely. With that being said I did a lot of research on Vignelli’s work and I took all of that into consideration when designing this project. Vignelli is known for the calendar he created, so I took his calendar design as inspiration. The main colors that he uses are red, black, and white, but in some of his other work he uses vibrant colors, with that being said, I wanted the main color of the calendar to be black and I wanted to use vibrant colors as the accent colors to incorporate all of his work/styles into this one design. I do think there is evidence of my knowledge of ethical guidelines as I wanted the design to favor Massimo Vignelli’s work, but I wanted it to be different enough that it still looked unique to me. I also made sure to title this work “Vignelli-Inspired Calendar” to let people know that the similarities were intentional. I do think my efforts towards creativity are evident, even though this is inspired by somebody else’s work.
The only specifications for this project were to choose a well-known graphic designer, create a calendar in their style, and be creative while doing so. I think I adhered to the specifications, as I researched Massimo Vignelli and his style and applied everything I learned to create this design. I did not find it necessary to deviate from the original direction, as I think this project accurately represents Vignelli’s style creatively.
